Challenge:
These experimental posters will promote and motivate public interest in LatinX Type Designers and their contemporary typefaces. Explore experimental approaches to poster design and layout to create emotional resonance, beautiful visual hierarchy and a dynamic, balanced layout.
Solution:
Plau’s “Tenez,” designed by Rodrigo Saiani, is an expressive typeface originating from pointed nib calligraphy. Plau prioritizes a type’s ability to build community. Their website says, “Just like music, typography starts great conversations, brings people together and accelerates ideas.” I wanted to create a design focused on how the font is meant to foster connection, both musically and conversationally.

The layers of pixelated lips imitate conversation. My direction for the design was to display the unity that can happen through face-to-face talk and digital dialogue.
The way music serves as a muse for the font led me to research Brazilian melodies, and ultimately inspired a loose, freehand, textured element. The blue shapes are made up of images of a telephone pole, signalling the communication motif.
